Chilibolaget – Passionate Craftsmanship from Åland
Chilibolaget was born out of chef Johan Kreku’s passion for the flavor of chili and its versatile use. In the spring of 2020, when working life slowed down, he began experimenting with vegetable fermentation as a hobby — which led to the idea of creating his own locally produced fermented chili sauce. That’s how Chilibolaget came to life.
At the heart of the company is careful craftsmanship and consistent quality. Each sauce goes through a fermentation process of up to 90 days, during which the chili’s heat softens, the flavor deepens, and a rich umami kick develops. The result is a balanced, aromatic, and multi-layered flavor experience.
To ensure shelf life and a truly unique flavor, Chilibolaget uses its own kombucha-based vinegar, which is crafted and fine-tuned separately for each product — not the other way around. This level of precision makes every bottle distinctive and genuinely local.
Johan continues to develop new flavor combinations and boldly experiment with new recipes, often in small batches that are released as limited seasonal editions.
